She once designed a commemorative plaque honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and those close to her recall her energy, warmth, and artistic flair. What Happened

On November 20, 1994, Robin Lawrence was found murdered inside her home on Reseca Lane in Springfield. Her husband, who was out of the country at the time, had grown concerned after being unable to reach her. He asked a neighbor to check on her. When the neighbor arrived, the back door was open, and Robin’s young daughter came to the door alone. Inside, Robin’s body was discovered—she had been stabbed 49 times.

It later emerged that Robin had been murdered days earlier, and that her daughter had been left alone in the house with her body. The child, who had undergone a liver transplant the year before, was severely dehydrated but miraculously survived.

The case shocked the local community and devastated her family. Despite the collection of DNA evidence at the scene, investigators were unable to find a match. For nearly 30 years, the case remained unsolved, with few leads and no closure. Robin’s family, including her sister Mary Warr Cowans and niece Lauren Ovans, continued to fight for justice, refusing to let her story be forgotten.

It wasn’t until 2023 that detectives working the cold case used advanced forensic genealogy to identify a suspect: Stephan Smerk, an Army veteran living in New York. When confronted by police, Smerk quickly confessed to the murder. He revealed he had left his barracks in Arlington in 1994 intending to kill someone—anyone. Robin’s home was chosen at random. He broke in, cut the phone line, and attacked her with a knife. Her daughter was in another room and was not physically harmed.

Smerk later said that if he hadn’t been married with children, he likely would have killed more. In March 2025, he was sentenced to 70 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree murder.
