Early Life and Career
Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola was born and raised in Mexico and came from a close-knit family. Her mother, Dr. Hilda Marcela Arzola-Plascencia, is a physician in Durango, Mexico. Friends described Hilda as intelligent, determined, outgoing, and passionate about architecture and design. She loved travel and had visited more than 20 countries despite her young age.
After earning qualifications in architecture, Hilda moved to Los Angeles to begin what many of her friends described as her dream job in interior design. The move represented a major step in her career, and she quickly built friendships within the city’s creative community. Those who knew her remembered her love of dancing, fashion, travel, and spending time with friends and family.
A New Life in Los Angeles
By 2021, Hilda had established herself in Los Angeles and was embracing opportunities in the design industry. Friends said she was excited about her future and eager to continue developing her career. Her relocation to California reflected years of hard work and ambition.
One of the friendships she formed was with model Christy Giles. The two women shared interests in design, creativity, and Los Angeles nightlife. Their friendship would place them together on the night that changed both of their lives forever.
The Night of November 12, 2021
On November 12, 2021, Hilda and Christy spent the evening socializing in Los Angeles. They began at Soho House before attending a warehouse party. During the night, they met David Brian Pearce and two associates. Surveillance footage later showed the women leaving the event with the men and traveling to Pearce’s apartment.
Evidence presented during the criminal case showed that shortly after arriving at the apartment, both women expressed a desire to leave. Text messages recovered by investigators revealed that plans were made to call an Uber. However, security footage showed the ride arriving and leaving without either woman entering the vehicle. Prosecutors later argued that the women had already become incapacitated.
Fighting for Her Life
The following day, surveillance cameras captured men transporting the unconscious women to separate hospitals. While Christy Giles was already dead when she arrived at a Culver City hospital, Hilda was still alive when she was left outside Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center. She was discovered in critical condition and rushed inside for emergency treatment.
Doctors fought to save her life, but the damage caused by the drugs in her system proved catastrophic. Hilda suffered severe medical complications and remained on life support while her family rushed from Mexico to Los Angeles. Her parents and sister arrived hoping for a recovery but were confronted with devastating news about her condition.
What Caused Hilda’s Death?
Unlike Christy Giles, who died shortly after arriving at the hospital, Hilda survived for nearly two weeks. Medical evidence showed she suffered multiple organ failure caused by drug intoxication. Toxicology reports found cocaine, MDMA (ecstasy), fentanyl, and other substances in her system. Investigators determined that her death was a homicide.
Her family eventually faced the heartbreaking decision to remove life support. Hilda died in late November 2021, just one day before her 27th birthday. Her death transformed the investigation from a suspicious overdose case into a double homicide inquiry that would eventually expose a broader pattern of criminal conduct.
The Investigation and Search for Justice
As detectives investigated, they discovered evidence linking David Pearce to both women’s deaths. The investigation also uncovered allegations from numerous women who claimed Pearce had drugged and sexually assaulted them over many years. Prosecutors argued that Hilda and Christy were targeted in a similar manner.
Hilda’s family remained committed to seeing the case through. Her father, Luis Cabrales Rivera, spoke publicly about the pain of losing his daughter and his hope that those responsible would be held accountable. The family worked alongside investigators and prosecutors throughout the lengthy legal process.
The Trial and Verdict
After years of investigation, David Brian Pearce went on trial for the murders of Hilda Cabrales-Arzola and Christy Giles. Prosecutors presented surveillance footage, forensic evidence, toxicology findings, DNA evidence, digital records, and testimony from numerous sexual assault survivors. They argued that Pearce supplied drugs to the women, sexually assaulted them, and failed to seek medical assistance when they became critically ill.
In February 2025, a Los Angeles jury found Pearce guilty of first-degree murder in Hilda’s death as well as Christy’s. Jurors also convicted him of multiple sexual assault offenses involving seven other women. The verdict marked a major victory for the victims’ families and survivors who had spent years seeking accountability.
Remembering Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola
Those closest to Hilda remember her as a talented architect with a bright future. Friends described her as someone who brought energy and warmth to every room. She was known for her love of travel, her dedication to her profession, and her ability to form lasting friendships.
Although her life ended at just 26 years old, Hilda’s story played a crucial role in exposing a serial predator and bringing justice to numerous victims. The conviction and subsequent sentence of David Pearce to 146 years to life in prison ensured that the circumstances surrounding her death were fully examined in court and that those responsible would be held accountable. Today, Hilda is remembered not for the tragedy that took her life, but for the promise, talent, and determination she demonstrated throughout her short but remarkable life.
