CBS’s 48 Hours returns Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 10:00 PM ET/PT with Beverly Hills 911, a new episode reported by Erin Moriarty that examines the death of Violet Yacobi inside her Beverly Hills mansion.
The episode looks at a case that first appeared to be a possible fall inside a wealthy widow’s home, but later became a murder investigation focused on her son, Daniel Yacobi. Violet Yacobi’s Life Before the Tragedy
Violet Yacobi was 67 years old when she was found dead on October 10, 2017. She was a recently widowed mother, grandmother, and longtime Beverly Hills resident who had built a comfortable life after immigrating to the United States in the 1980s, following years spent in the Soviet Union and Israel.
Her husband, Solomon Yacobi, was a physician who died in 2016. After his death, Violet entered a year-long mourning period and was preparing to return to a more active social life. She had close ties with her daughter Dina, her son Daniel, her mother, and her brothers, many of whom lived nearby.
The Discovery Inside the Beverly Hills Mansion
Concern began when Violet failed to respond to a call from her brother, who had planned to drive her to a mechanic. Her silence was unusual because family members were used to hearing from her often.
That evening, Daniel and Dina went to the family’s Beverly Hills home to check on her. They found Violet lying on the marble floor near the foot of the grand staircase. Police saw no sign of forced entry, and early questions centered on whether she had died from an accident, a fall, or something else.
The Case Turns Toward Homicide
The investigation changed after the coroner determined Violet died by asphyxiation and ruled the death a homicide. That finding shifted attention from the possibility of an accidental fall to the possibility that someone had killed her inside the home.
On February 12, 2018, Daniel Yacobi was arrested and later charged with murdering his mother. Prosecutors argued that he strangled Violet and staged the scene to look like a fall. The case also raised questions about money, family tension, and Daniel’s standing to inherit part of Violet’s estate.
Prosecutors’ Case Against Daniel Yacobi
At trial, prosecutors said Daniel had a financial motive because he stood to inherit half of Violet’s estimated $12 million estate. Deputy District Attorney Shane Michael told jurors that Daniel “choked the life out of her” and left her in the home where he had once lived.
The prosecution also presented evidence about Daniel’s alleged state of mind. A witness testified that Daniel said he hated his parents, felt pressured into dentistry, and viewed his mother as controlling. Another family friend told police that Daniel had asked about inheritance tax weeks before Violet’s death.
Forensic Evidence and Digital Clues
Prosecutors pointed to geo-location data and surveillance evidence that they said placed Daniel’s white Jaguar near Violet’s home on October 9, 2017. They argued that he entered the home and strangled her during a window of several hours.
They also cited an online search allegedly connected to Daniel: “does the choke hold create a bruise?” For prosecutors, that search supported their theory that Violet’s death was not an accident, but a planned killing disguised as a fall.
The Defense Argument
Daniel Yacobi pleaded not guilty. His defense argued that Violet may have died from blunt force trauma consistent with falling from a second-story balcony.
The defense also challenged the prosecution’s financial motive theory. They argued that Daniel did not need money and had recently secured a $1 million loan connected to a dental practice he was negotiating to buy in Inglewood, California.
Trial, Verdict, and Sentence
Daniel Yacobi’s trial began on July 21, 2025, after years of delays. Jurors heard competing theories about Violet’s death, including the prosecution’s claim of strangulation and the defense’s argument that the injuries were consistent with a fall.
On August 22, 2025, the jury found Daniel guilty of first-degree murder. Jurors also found true the special allegation that the murder was committed for financial gain. On October 3, 2025, Daniel was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

48 Hours: Beverly Hills 911 revisits the case through the work of investigators, forensic experts, prosecutors, and those who knew the Yacobi family. The episode features Beverly Hills Police Department Detective Mark Schwartz and retired detective George Elwell, who explain how the investigation developed after the first call to the mansion.
The case remains disturbing because of the setting and the family relationship at its center. Violet Yacobi’s death began as a mystery inside a Beverly Hills home, but the courtroom outcome concluded that her own son killed her for financial gain.
