“Kouri Richins: Behind the Facade”: 48 Hours Reports May 23 2026

CBS’s 48 Hours closes its season on Saturday, May 23, 2026, with “Kouri Richins: Behind the Facade,” an hour-long special on the murder of Eric Richins and the conviction of his wife, Kouri Richins. The episode airs at 10:00 PM ET/PT on CBS and streams on Paramount+.

Correspondent Natalie Morales reports from Kamas, Utah, where a case that began as a story of grief became one of the most scrutinized murder trials in the country. Richins first drew public attention after publishing a children’s book about loss following her husband’s death. Prosecutors later argued that the image of a grieving widow concealed a calculated killing driven by money, debt, infidelity, and fear of losing control.

Eric Richins’ Death and the Start of the Investigation

Eric Richins, 39, was found dead in the couple’s home on March 4, 2022. Kouri told police that the couple had been celebrating a real estate transaction and that she had made Eric a drink before going to sleep in one of their children’s rooms.

When she returned to the bedroom hours later, she said she found him unresponsive. An autopsy later showed Eric died from a fentanyl overdose. Investigators said the amount in his system was about five times a lethal dose.

The Children’s Book That Brought National Attention

After Eric’s death, Kouri Richins published Are You With Me?, a picture book about a child coping with the death of his father. She said the book was meant to help her three sons process their grief and understand that their father’s presence remained with them.

The book became central to the public fascination with the case. Before her arrest, Richins appeared in media interviews promoting it as a resource for grieving families. Prosecutors later framed the book as part of a public image that stood in contrast to the evidence they presented at trial.

Prosecutors’ Theory of Motive

Prosecutors argued that Kouri Richins was under serious financial pressure. They said her real estate business was struggling, she had large debts, and she stood to benefit from life insurance policies connected to Eric.

The state also pointed to her relationship with another man, Josh Grossmann. Jurors heard text messages in which Richins discussed wanting a future with him and wishing her husband would “go away.” Prosecutors said the affair, financial strain, and insurance money created the motive for murder.

The Valentine’s Day Poisoning Attempt

Kouri Richins was also convicted of attempting to kill Eric weeks before his death. Prosecutors said she gave him a fentanyl-laced sandwich on Valentine’s Day 2022.

Eric became ill after eating part of the sandwich. According to court filings and testimony, he told friends he believed his wife may have tried to poison him. Prosecutors used that earlier incident to argue that Eric’s death was not accidental or self-inflicted, but part of a pattern.

Key Evidence Presented at Trial

The trial included testimony from more than 40 witnesses. One of the prosecution’s major witnesses was housecleaner Carmen Lauber, who testified that she sold pills to Kouri Richins in early 2022. Cell phone evidence was also used to connect movements and communications around the alleged drug purchases.

Jurors also heard about internet searches from Richins’ phone, including searches about fentanyl, poisoning, death certificates, life insurance, and deleting phone data. Prosecutors argued those searches showed knowledge, planning, and a guilty conscience.

The Defense Argument

Richins’ attorneys argued that prosecutors had not proved how Eric received the fentanyl. They also suggested Eric may have had his own access to drugs and challenged the credibility of witnesses who cooperated with the state.

The defense rested without calling witnesses. Richins did not testify at trial. Her lawyers maintained that the state’s case relied on interpretation and circumstantial evidence, but the jury rejected that argument.

Verdict and Sentencing

In March 2026, an eight-person jury found Kouri Richins guilty of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, insurance fraud, and forgery. The verdict followed a trial that focused on financial records, text messages, digital evidence, witness testimony, and the events leading up to Eric’s death.

On May 13, 2026, Judge Richard Mrazik sentenced Richins to life in prison without parole. The sentencing took place on what would have been Eric’s 44th birthday. The judge also ordered consecutive sentences on other convictions.

Impact on Eric Richins’ Family

The sentencing hearing included statements from Eric’s family and from the couple’s three sons, read in court by therapists. The boys said they feared their mother and did not want her released.

Eric’s relatives urged the court to impose the harshest sentence available. They described the loss of Eric as devastating and said the children would continue to live with the consequences of the crime.

What 48 Hours Adds to the Case

“Kouri Richins: Behind the Facade” focuses on the contrast between Richins’ public image and the case prosecutors built in court. The episode includes jurors speaking about the evidence that led them to convict her.

The special also features interviews with Greg Hall, Greg Skordas, and former defense attorney Skye Lazaro. Together, the interviews help place the verdict in context and examine why the case captured national attention.

A Case Defined by Image, Evidence, and Betrayal

The murder of Eric Richins became known not only because of the poisoning allegation, but because of the public story that followed it. A widow who presented herself as an author helping children cope with grief was later convicted of creating that grief through murder.

For 48 Hours, the case offers a look at how investigators, prosecutors, jurors, and Eric’s family came to view the same story from opposite sides. “Behind the Facade” closes the season by revisiting a case built around loss, deception, and the collapse of a public image.
