Nicholas told friends and acquaintances that the couple was living under threat from a man he identified as “Jim McIntyre,” whom he claimed was connected to federal authorities and had warned them they were in danger. Prosecutors later stated that there was no evidence such a person existed. Instead, they argued that the couple’s movements were connected to financial problems, including a $1.5 million divorce judgment that Nicholas had been ordered to pay to a former spouse.

Disappearance and the Discovery of Her Remains

In late 2022, contact with Mindi became limited, and conflicting information began to circulate about her condition and whereabouts. Some people close to the couple were led to believe that she had died under medical care, a claim that later proved false.

On December 2, 2022, human remains were discovered on the grounds of a hunting club near Riceboro in coastal Georgia, along the Liberty and McIntosh County line. Investigators determined that the remains, which had been dismembered and scattered, belonged to Mindi Kassotis. Authorities concluded that her body had been placed at the location sometime after November 18, 2022.

The discovery transformed the case into a homicide investigation and prompted a detailed effort to reconstruct her final weeks.

Investigation and Arrest

As detectives examined financial records, communications, travel patterns, and forensic evidence, their attention focused on Nicholas Kassotis. Investigators determined that he had provided inconsistent accounts about his wife’s death and movements.

In May 2023, Nicholas was arrested in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he had been living under the name Nicholas Kilian James Stark. He was charged with multiple offenses, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence, and counts related to the dismemberment and concealment of Mindi’s body.

The investigation also revealed continued deception after her death. Nicholas had entered a new relationship and remarried, telling his new spouse that his previous wife had died years earlier.

Trial, Verdict, and Justice

Nicholas Kassotis’ trial took place in 2025. Prosecutors presented forensic findings, digital evidence, and witness testimony that they said established his responsibility for Mindi’s death and the effort to conceal the crime. The defense argued that the mysterious figure Nicholas had described had influenced the couple’s lives and actions.

After deliberating for just over an hour, the jury found Nicholas Kassotis guilty on all 12 charges, including malice murder. The verdict brought a strong emotional response from Mindi’s family and friends, who had followed the case closely.

Judge Charles Rose sentenced Nicholas to life in prison without the possibility of parole, along with an additional consecutive sentence of 25 years. In sentencing, the court described the crime as severe and supported by substantial evidence.
