Who Was Selonia Reed & What Happened to Her? 2026 Update & Profile

Selonia Reed was a 26-year-old bank teller from Hammond, Louisiana, whose brutal murder in August 1987 left behind a six-year-old son and became one of the state’s longest-running cold cases. For decades, her family searched for answers while the investigation stalled. Advances in forensic science and renewed investigative work eventually led to the conviction of her husband, Reginald Reed Sr., more than 35 years after her death.

A Young Wife and Devoted Mother
Born and raised in Louisiana, Selonia was known by family, friends, and co-workers as a caring and dependable person. She worked as a teller in the commercial division of Citizens National Bank in Hammond and was described by investigators as polite, kind, and devoted to her young son, Reginald “Reggie” Reed Jr. Friends recalled that most of her time outside work revolved around her family, particularly Reggie.
Selonia married Reginald Reed Sr., a former U.S. Marine who later worked in automobile sales. The couple had one son, Reggie, born in 1981. While the family appeared stable from the outside, investigators later learned from relatives that the marriage had become troubled. Several family members reported that Selonia had spoken about physical abuse and had discussed divorcing her husband before her death.
The Night She Never Came Home
On August 22, 1987, Selonia spent the day with her family, including a trip to Hammond Square Mall where she bought six-year-old Reggie a chocolate chip cookie. It became one of the last memories he would ever have of his mother. That evening, according to her husband’s account, Selonia planned to meet a girlfriend while Reginald stayed home with their son.
The following morning, Reginald Reed Sr. reported his wife missing. About an hour later, police discovered Selonia’s blue Chevrolet Sprint parked near John’s Curb Market in Hammond. Inside was her body. She had suffered extensive blunt-force injuries to her face, more than a dozen stab wounds, and had been sexually assaulted. Investigators also found a white lotion-like substance spread across parts of her body, although any message it may have formed could not be interpreted due to the summer heat.
Why Investigators Suspected Her Husband
Detectives quickly noticed inconsistencies in Reginald Reed Sr.’s account. He claimed Selonia had gone out with a friend, but that friend told police the two had made no plans to meet that evening. During interviews, Reginald also suggested his wife may have been seeing another man, but investigators found no evidence supporting that claim.
Police searched the Reed home and observed signs that raised additional questions. Officers reported smelling bleach inside the house and noted freshly vacuumed carpeting. They also found scratches on Reginald’s neck, which he attributed to the family dog. Although investigators believed he was their primary suspect, the available forensic evidence in 1987 was insufficient to support criminal charges.
The Cold Case Is Solved
For decades, Selonia’s murder remained unsolved. In 2011, Louisiana State Police reopened the investigation, and Lt. Barry Ward began reviewing the evidence using modern forensic techniques. DNA testing on a cigarette butt recovered near Selonia’s vehicle identified Jimmy Ray Barnes, a friend of Reginald Reed Sr.
Barnes later agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. He testified that Reginald Reed Sr. had recruited him to help dispose of Selonia’s body after the killing. Investigators concluded that Selonia was likely murdered inside the family home while six-year-old Reggie slept nearby. Her body was then transported to the location where police found her vehicle the next morning.
Justice After Thirty-Five Years
Reginald Reed Sr. was arrested in 2019 and brought to trial in 2022. Prosecutors presented evidence that included witness testimony, forensic findings, inconsistencies in his original statements, and evidence that he had purchased multiple life insurance policies on Selonia before her death.
In November 2022, a jury found Reginald Reed Sr. guilty of second-degree murder. He was sentenced in January 2023 to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Throughout the investigation, trial, and subsequent appeals, he has maintained his innocence.
Her Lasting Legacy
Although Selonia Reed’s life ended at just 26 years old, her story has continued through her son, Reginald “Reggie” Reed Jr. After learning as an adult that his father had always been the prime suspect, he began his own search for answers while struggling to reconcile the father who raised him with the man prosecutors said murdered his mother.
Reggie chronicled that journey in his memoir, The Day My Mother Never Came Home. The book explores not only the murder investigation but also the lifelong effects of childhood trauma, grief, and unanswered questions. Through interviews, public appearances, and his writing, he has worked to preserve his mother’s memory while acknowledging that, despite the conviction, the emotional impact of losing both parents in different ways continues to shape his life.
