Relationship with Cayley Mandadi
Howerton and Mandadi began their relationship in 2017. This period marked the start of a series of troubling events and violent incidents that would ultimately lead to legal repercussions for Howerton.
Howerton’s relationship with Mandadi was characterized by control, aggression, and violence. Incidents reported by Mandadi’s friends and sorority sisters pointed to a pattern of abusive behavior. Howerton was known to have slammed Mandadi’s head against a car window and was accused of destroying her dorm room at Trinity University in an episode described as “roid rage” by Mandadi’s roommate.
The Fateful Weekend and Aftermath
The events leading to Mandadi’s death began at the Mala Luna Music Festival on October 28 and 29, 2017. Howerton and Mandadi attended the festival, where they consumed alcohol and Molly. An argument ensued after Mandadi saw her ex-boyfriend, which led to the couple leaving the festival prematurely.
Howerton brought Mandadi to a Luling hospital on October 29, where she was found bruised, unresponsive, and partially nude. Howerton initially claimed they had consensual “rough sex,” but medical examinations and investigations suggested a violent sexual assault. Mandadi was taken off life support days later and pronounced dead.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Following Mandadi’s death, Howerton turned himself in, facing charges of murder and sexual assault. The arrest warrant detailed various incidents of violence in the couple’s relationship, including threats with a firearm and physical abuse.
Howerton’s trial was fraught with revelations of his violent past and inconsistencies in his story. Despite his attorney John T. Hunter’s insistence on his innocence, the jury found Howerton guilty of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, a charge less severe than the initial accusation of murder.
Current Status
As of now, Mark Howerton is serving a 20-year sentence at the Garza West Unit in Beeville, Texas. His sentence reflects the gravity of his actions leading to Cayley Mandadi’s death. Eligible for parole in May 2033, Howerton’s life has been significantly altered by the events of 2017 and their aftermath.
